What are Black Freshwater Cultured Pearls?

Freshwater cultured pearls come in a variety of colors, some of them natural and some of them not. Pale pink, peach, cream, and lavender and white are the only naturally-occurring colors for freshwater cultured pearls. Black never occurs naturally in freshwater cultured pearls—only in Tahitian pearls—so any black pearls you see have definitely been color enhanced. This is very common and the color is permanent.

Interestingly, black pearls actually come in a variety of hues. Some are blueish-black, others may be grayish-black, purplish-black, greenish-black, or brownish black. Below, you can see some examples of various shades of black freshwater cultured pearls.
